An A-Z of banned words. Part 1.

An A-Z of banned words. Part 1.

Whilst listening to Radio Three, arguably a Europhile station, and an admirer of Them, and subsequent Van Morrison records, arguably Irish, I offer an A-Z of words which might be banned in the light of Brexit because they are not English.

As they are many I will do so in instalments.

Aristocracy – greek
Beauty – french/latin
Chimney – french/latin/greek
Dozen – french/latin
Empire – french/latin
Flower – french/latin
Grace – french/latin
Hospital – french/latin
Image – french/latin

The words having been banned we cannot of course subscribe to an etymology of English replacements, but can look into some roots which have the advantage of being only Old Norse.
